Making Improvement A Habit

Get the work process right and it will make problems visible.

Even with good planned maintenance and operator training in place, it takes a multiple actions to ensure that problems get resolved for good.

Putting the final part of the jigsaw in place involves making improvement part of the routine to facilitate the right level of engagement and support so that the weaknesses are worked on until they are resolved.

How do you do that?

Priming the Improvement Habit

Allocate problem areas to small teams with a brief to gain an insight into what is happening and try out ideas to resolve the problems.

When the problem is solved, reflect on why the work process allowed the problem to happen.  Take actions to lock in the gains made by investing time to:

  • Simplify critical and complex processes so that they are easy to do right, difficult to do wrong and simple to learn.
  • Standardise core tasks to improve workforce flexibility and use of skills.
  • Make normal conditions visible at a glance to improve early problem detection

Underpin the development of effective shop floor processes with the creation of:

  1. A Plan for Every Asset (PFEA) to support the continuous update of working methods, standard practices and learning plans so that changes are controlled and work standards are maintained.
  2. A Standardisation process that supports capability development, employee engagement and progress towards high performance teamwork.
  3. Local Area performance management processes that drive improvement in work practices, standards and skills as part of the day to day routine.
  4.  A Focussed Improvement glide path and tactics to systematically raise effectiveness

Do this well and it will generate a 4 -6 times return on the time invested. That means payback in months if not weeks.
